When moving homes, it’s only natural to spread the word and tell everyone who needs to know the good news. However, the list of people to tell spans much wider than just your friends and family. So much so, that it’s easy to forget someone if you aren’t prepared.
Here’s a breakdown of everyone you need to notify when you move house:
Your employer
Notifying your workplace about your move is essential, even if you aren’t relocating. Let your boss know about your change of address so they can update your contact details. This is important for your payroll too.
National insurance
The government can use your National Insurance (NI) number to help identify you which is also required by HMRC, the DVLA, and your employer. Because of this, making sure your National Insurance information is up-to-date is extremely important. To change your information, make sure to have your NI number to hand when you call HMRC.
Inland revenue
Possibly the most important place to notify is Inland Revenue as they’ll need to know your details for your taxes. You can update this information yourself on Gov.uk.

Council Tax office
This is a top priority. Your local council needs to know when you move so they can update your Council Tax bill. You may get a refund if you’ve overpaid at your previous address or need to start payments for your new home. Check your new council’s website to update your details, or give them a call to avoid any interruptions.
Electoral roll
Make sure you’re registered to vote at your new address by updating your details on the electoral roll. This can also help maintain your credit score, as many lenders check your current address against the electoral register.
Utility providers
Your energy, water, and broadband services need updating so that your final bills are calculated correctly, and you can start fresh in your new home without hassle. Here’s a breakdown:
Gas and electricity
Contact your current supplier with your final meter readings. You may also want to compare tariffs to ensure you’re getting the best deal at your new address.
Water
Notify your water provider of your move and provide any meter readings.
Broadband and landline
Arrange to transfer or cancel your broadband service ahead of time. Some companies require at least 30 days’ notice.
TV license
If you have a TV Licence, you’ll need to update it with your new address. You can easily change it online, ensuring you’re still covered at your new home. Don’t forget, you still need a licence even if you only watch TV online.

Royal Mail redirection
One of the easiest ways to avoid missing important post is by setting up a Royal Mail redirection service. This will forward all your mail to your new address for a set period (3, 6, or 12 months), giving you time to update your details with everyone who needs it.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
HMRC needs your updated address for tax purposes, especially if you’re employed or receive benefits like tax credits. You can change your address online by logging into your personal tax account.
Banks and financial institutions
It’s essential to notify your bank, building society, and any other financial institutions (such as credit card companies and loan providers) of your move. Log into your accounts or contact their customer service departments to update your address.
Don’t forget to update:
- Savings accounts
- Investment services
- Premium bonds (via NS&I)
- Store or credit card providers
Insurance providers
Whether it’s home, contents, car, or health insurance, your providers will need to be informed about your move. Some policies, like home and car insurance, may require changes to reflect your new property or postcode.
DVLA
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) must be notified of your change of address for both your driving licence and your vehicle registration (V5C logbook). Failing to do so could result in fines. You can change these details quickly online.
Healthcare providers
Don’t forget to inform your:
- GP – If you’re moving to a new area, you may need to register with a new doctor.
- Dentist – Update your details or register with a new practice.
- Optician – Ensure they have your latest contact information, especially if you’re due for a check-up.
- Vet – If you have pets, your vet needs to know where to find you in case of any reminders or emergencies.
Subscriptions and deliveries
If you receive any regular deliveries or subscriptions (like magazines, wine clubs, or meal kits), be sure to update your delivery address to avoid any disruptions. This also includes Amazon, eBay, and other online retailers where you may have saved your previous address for speedy checkouts.
